L.C. Morgan - Humankind (Invasion Day, #1)

**Review by Susan

“The human race will ultimately be responsible for its own demise. It is with great certainty that I alert you of this now, and you heed my warnings. What we have called the ‘benefits culture’ for hundreds of years has caused profound chaos to our world and its economy, and it is damage I fear we will not return from.” President of the USA, Harold Chant, the year 2465.

“We need to find alternative fuels and a cure for overpopulation. But short of a miracle or genocide, I fear it’s too late…” Queen Anastasia of England, the year 2989.

Against all foretelling and scientific proof, humans have ruined their home, Earth. Overpopulation and the misuse of valuable fossil fuels have resulted in the end of the world fast approaching, and many believe it might be too late to stop it.
With that fear very much in mind, in the year 3030, an alien race called the Thrakorian’s stepped in to take charge of the Earth and its inhabitants, but at a price.
Rather than leading by fear, the Thrakorian’s have ensured the loyalty and servitude of the human race through gratitude and a sense of purpose they’d been lacking for generations. But can their savior’s really be as generous as they seem?

Years later, and rebel forces are intent on bringing down their new governing race, and Earth’s new leader atop it. Loyal humans must fight against their own, but to what end, and for whose agenda?

Young Kyra Millan is a girl from the slums with a valuable mind. She’s intent on fighting her way up the social ladders and starting a new life based on her own merit, and will do anything it takes to reach her peak. Kyra also harbors a strange and unusual secret though, and it’s one she holds so precious it consumes her. Before long it becomes clear that all is not what it seems, but when you’re in too deep can you ever come back, and would you even want to?
Kyra must decide, and with everything on the line she’ll have to prove herself if she wants to survive.

So this is my second read by Laura Morgan and it blew me away...having read very few Sci-fi reads I can honestly say this ticked every box for me.

Kyra Millan after losing all she knows on 'invasion day' at only five, knows exactly where and what she wants to do with her life.

------------------------------
I want to serve, and I'm not afraid of hard work.  I'm ready to be a soldier first and a geek second.
------------------------------

With her education coming to an end she heads straight for human armed forces with a view to getting into elite computer intelligence and code breaking as her specialty this girl has got to be one of the strongest and hard headed characters I've come across. She knows what she wants and gives it everything she's got.

------------------------------
All your life you've been held back because of your bed in that foster home and the status it gave you, but now the world's your oyster, and I can't wait to see what you do with it.
------------------------------

The thraks (human cousins/invaders) think they are superior in all things, but cling onto the humans that they can't be without - Kyra being one of them. With her training, we see her grow and develop physically and even emotionally with a heartbreak combined...

------------------------------
Being alone was better than being with a man so desperate to keep her under his control that he was willing to sabotage her career in order to do so...
------------------------------

The emotions in the story broke me, when the writer makes you fall in love with a character, it breaks a little of my own heart when they turn out to be a let down but for me? That says the author is going their job brilliantly.

As her career progresses and opportunities come her way (very much through her own merit!) she proves herself worthy of working in The Tower where her future lies ahead of her...capturing the affections of a Thyrakian with the power and respect to give her more than any human would imagine.

With a blast from invasion day, and someone who has played heavily on her mind since she lost everything she knew at just five, I sincerely hope her go-get attitude will get her what her heart desires going further into this series.

Final excerpt:
------------------------------
I'm not promising you perfection, but I can promise you're one of the very few humans who've been offered this procedure.  I can't give you love, marriage or a family, but I can offer you your health and a long life.  I guarantee we'll have a lot of fun together, and I'll never hurt you.
------------------------------

A truly brilliant read, that for me was all about a strong willed and bodied woman, who is a real aspiration in reaching her goals. Her attitude and intelligence in all things career orientated shows us one very strong cookie.

I loved the fact the author broke down the ranks at the beginning of the book, it gave me a much better understanding and enjoyed flipping back to it when dealing with different ranks that Kyra came across.

An all round brilliant read, that although seemed a little long, the finer details for me made it the five star it deserves.
